Chattahoochee Technical College Wins six awards for Marketing and Public Relations

Media release: Chattahoochee Technical College's Department of External Affairs brought home six awards for their efforts over the past year. National Council for Marketing and Public Relations (NCMPR) District 2 awarded CTC with six of its prestigious honors for communications and marketing.

A reported 426 entries were judged from the more than 50 community and technical college's participating in this year's competition. The college won two gold, two silver and two bronze awards at the annual conference in Atlanta this October.

Among its gold winning entries were the college's promotional video and its campaign for a special event – the opening of the college's eighth campus. Silver winners included the college's recently redesigned website and its recruitment campaign that encouraged high school students to consider dual enrollment options at CTC. Bronze winners were a recruitment campaign to encourage prospective students to apply by July and a media success story to highlight some of the college's successful programs.

"We are thrilled with the recognition," said Chattahoochee Technical College Vice President of External Affairs Jennifer Nelson. "The team works hard to put together solid, dynamic, and effective messages that can be delivered through a variety of mediums. To hear from our peers that we are doing a good job is a great honor."

The NCMPR District 2 Medallion Awards recognize outstanding achievement in communications at community and technical colleges in District 7. It's the only regional competition of its kind that honors excellence exclusively among marketing and PR professionals at two-year colleges. District 2 includes Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands and The Bahamas.

Chattahoochee Tech to offer training in Manufacturing

Media release: Chattahoochee Technical College's Department of Community and Economic Development will begin its Certified Production Technician Training Program this November. The college is currently the only certified Manufacturing Skills Standards Council center in Georgia.

"Trained and certified production technician workers can help this community to be more competitive in attracting high-wage/high-skilled jobs," said Chattahoochee Technical College Vice President of Community of Community and Economic Development Glenn Rasco. "This program will help address the growing skills gap by making it clear to workers what skills they need to work in manufacturing, and at the same time enable manufacturers to identify applicants who have the requisite skills."

Offered at the Chattahoochee Technical College Manufacturing Training Center in Austell, the program is an industry-led training, assessment and certification system focused on the core skills and knowledge needed by the nation's production workers. Based upon federally endorsed national standards, this program offers production workers the opportunity to demonstrate that they have mastered the skills increasingly needed in the high-growth, technical jobs of the 21st century.

Scheduled to be completed in four weeks, the program consists of four individual certificate modules, including Safety, Quality Practices and Measurement, Manufacturing Processes and Production and Maintenance Awareness. Applicants to the program should be 18 or older, have a high school diploma or GED and be a United States citizen or permanent resident alien. Other requirements include a Georgia Work Ready certificate, and passing scores in Math and English on the TABE exam.

The cost of the program is $2,499, which includes each of the four modules and certification exam costs. Class size is limited to 15 students. The first class is scheduled to begin Nov. 14 with a registration deadline of Nov. 4.

For more information about the program, call 770-528-4551.

More than 40 companies participating in CTC Career and College Fair on Oct. 25

Armed with training and education, Chattahoochee Technical College students will be looking better than ever at the school's Fall Career and College Fair October 25. More than 30 companies and organizations will be on hand to speak with job seekers about seasonal, temporary and permanent positions.

"Many people feel that the jobs are just not out there, but that's not the case with these companies," said Lucylle Shelton, Career Services Coordinator with Chattahoochee Technical College. "Every company attending this event will have jobs available."

Planned for Oct. 25 in the Student Life Center on Chattahoochee Technical College's Marietta campus, the event will run from 10 am to 1 pm. Shelton said she expects more companies to sign on before the event. Many of the employers are looking for students with backgrounds in automotive, HVAC, electrical, computers and business. Also on hand at the event will be seven local colleges and universities where students can talk to recruiters about furthering their education.

"Participants should bring plenty of copies of their resume and be dressed as though they were going to a job interview," Shelton said. "That means no jeans, tennis shoes, flip flops or tank tops. We expect everyone to dress and act like a professional."

For more information on the Spring Career and College Fair, including information about the participating companies, visit http://ctc.experience.com or visit www.ChattahoocheeTech.edu.

CMC offers special rate on mammograms in October

Media release: The Women's Center at Cartersville Medical Center will offer all mammograms — including digital — at a special rate of $49 in October through the end of the year.  This is a 50% discount from the normal charge of $99.  A separate physician reading fee will apply.

The chance of developing invasive breast cancer at some point in a woman's life is approximately 1 in 8.  Breast cancer is the second most common type of cancer in women and the second leading cause of cancer death in women.  There are currently about 2.5 million breast cancer survivors in the United States.

"This special rate meets the need for affordable mammography screenings in our community, which is an important factor in overall women's health." says Melanie Vanhorn, Women's Center supervisor at Cartersville Medical Center. "We are excited to offer this opportunity to the women of our community."

Highlighting the month's awareness activities is "TaTas and Tiaras" — an event especially for breast cancer patients and survivors — on Thursday, October 27, from 6-9 p.m. at The Hope Center featuring the female breast care physician team, refreshments, beauty tips, door prizes and a special take-home "paint-it-yourself" party favor.

Belk in Cartersville will provide a Clinique representative for consultations and coupons for free facials for event attendees.   Additionally, Belk has donated several fabulous door prizes for the event.  Donna Wood will pamper attendees with BeautiControl hand moisturizing products.  And, The Hope Center Foundation will launch a new support group, "Jewels of Hope," a fun jewelry-making class for every skill level.

The Women's Center and The Hope Center have had incredible response from community organizations interested in partnering to raise awareness about breast cancer, including The Magnolia Garden Club in Cartersville, which will place two planters of pink flowers at the entrance of The Hope Center in observance of this special month.

Finally, to celebrate women's health and encourage women to schedule their mammograms, The Hope Center at Cartersville Medical Center will hang a special oversized vertical banner on the front of The Hope Center with the message "Is it Time?", a visual reminder of the importance of early detection.  Bright pink billboards were recently posted touting "The Best Women for the Job" and featuring Rhonda Wachsmuth, MD; Madhurima Uppalapati, MD; and Lorie Hughes, MD.

All mammograms at Cartersville Medical Center are performed on state-of-the-art mammography equipment.  The key to mammography screening is that it be done routinely--once is not enough. Women should have their baseline mammogram at age 35 and annual screening mammograms after the age of 40.  A separate physician fee will apply for all mammograms.

To schedule your reduced rate mammogram or to register for "TaTas and Tiaras", call MedLine at 800-242-5662.
