Downtown Mr. Brown's barbecue opens Friday:

The former Cotton Block Barbecue will be home to Downtown Mr. Brown's barbecue starting Friday at 10:30 a.m.

-Chuck Youngblood says the restaurant will be open Mondays through Saturdays from 10:30 a.m. until 7:30 p.m., serving pulled pork, ribs, brisket and more as well as beans, potato salad, cole slaw and fries (coming soon). The meat will never be boiled, says Youngblood, adding, "No cheating."

-Prices start at $5 ("tax included") for barbecue sandwich, fries and drink. The average order will cost around $8, he says. As for extras: Downtown Mr. Brown's offers delivery service as well as catering, he says. For more, call 706-291-4799.

-Solid timing on the opening: Downtown Mr. Brown's opens just hours before this month's First Friday concert at nearby Bridgepoint Plaza (7 p.m.). Also this weekend: Classic Car Cruise In, 5-9 p.m. Saturday, Fourth Avenue> Details.

-History: For years, 1 Broad St. was home to Cotton Block and drew a great mix of downtown professionals and others. It later became Henry's Smoke Shack.

A clutch hit by Shayne Moody in the bottom of the ninth powered pinch runner Samuel Sime's (20, left) gallop to home plate, giving the Rome Braves a 3-2 walk-off win over the Savannah Sandgnats Tuesday night.
