-Feb. 23 auction set for former Rome Zartic/Pierre Foods plant: The property at 438 Lavendar Drive NW includes the processing plant as well as "prime real estate" as part of the package. Harry Davis & Co. is conducting the auction with help from Toles, Temple & Wright. The listing is extensive and includes processing equipment. Pierre Foods closed the plant after laying off 350 workers there in August. Details: Harry Davis

-Gingrey, colleagues travel to the United States border with Mexico to examine techniques being used to fight illegal immigration. Says U.S. Rep. Phil Gingrey: "Illegal immigration is one of the most pressing issues facing our nation today, particularly in my home state of Georgia where we have seen a 115 percent increase since 2000. I look forward to this opportunity to evaluate the tools and strategies used by Customs and Border Protection to gain control of the border and protect our ports of entry."

-Gingrey, GOP doctors' caucus praise judge's decision on 'Obamacare': Rep. Phil Gingrey, Co-Chair of the panel: "The American people rejected the President's health care plan last November, the U.S. House of Representatives repealed it two weeks ago, and now the justice system has again ruled it unconstitutional. With this ruling, our nation is one step closer to reaffirming what Thomas Jefferson meant when he said, "the policy of the American government is to leave their citizens free."

-Generations of Braves meet the community at Hot Stove Gathering: It was something of a harmonic convergence for Atlanta Braves baseball fans. Here was legendary pitcher Phil Niekro and two of the clubs young guns, Mike Minor and Craig Kimbrel. And with them was Matt Walbeck, the new manager of the Rome Braves, as well as some of his coaches--all hired to help continue the development of the next round of Major League players. -Feb. 1: Blood Assurance's Donor U blood drive to benefit local schools: From 10 a.m. until 8 p.m., Blood Assurance is staging a community blood drive at The Forum to help bolster blood products at area hospitals. Blood Assurance is the only agency supplying blood to hospitals in our area. By donating blood, donors will be able to "vote" for a local school. Gift cards to Staples will be awarded to the top three schools in both the public and private categories ($500, $250 and $100). For more: please see the website.
