Ribbon cutting held for new student center at Chattahoochee Tech

Media release: Chattahoochee Technical College held a ribbon cutting Monday for its new student center addition at the North Metro Campus in Acworth. The renovated space was officially open for business at the beginning of Fall Semester.

"This is a wonderful addition to this campus for students, faculty, staff and visitors," said Chattahoochee Technical College President Dr. Ron Newcomb. "We have already seen students congregating here to work collaboratively or just sit and chat between classes. I know this area will be well used and a popular place for everyone."

Located in Building A on the North Metro Campus, the 3,200 square foot area includes vending machines, dining tables, areas for study groups and more for use by students between classes. With its more open design the facility feeds into the college's library, student affairs area, and the Success Center, which all have entrances off of the renovated area. The rounded design also provides a centralized entrance to the building with bold lettering for visitors to Chattahoochee Technical College.

The project budget came in at $881,129 for construction costs and $264,466 for furnishings.

"Collaborative spaces are critical in today's college designs," said Vice President of Facilities David Simmons. "These are spaces that can accommodate a variety of activities for students, staff and the community at large. The new student center and success center are a welcome addition to North Metro."

Chattahoochee Technical College's eight campuses over six counties include 857,433 square foot of space and 34 buildings. During Fiscal Year 2012 improvements were made to several of the buildings to create updated, cohesive and student friendly areas. Funding was allocated to perform some renovations of space, modernization of furniture and upgrades in equipment.

Tutoring at Success Centers is now available at seven of the eight campuses. Tutoring is available in English, math, reading, and more. Tutoring may be offered for other subjects depending upon availability of tutors. There is no charge for this service. The college also provides an online learning center where all students may access tutorials and many other resources.
