-'Go Gordon's' aim -- 'keep it in the county': Similar to the "Shop Rome" campaign, the Gordon County Chamber of Commerce is leading a communitywide effort to keep Gordon-earned dollars inside the county lines. The goal is to help local businesses by urging merchants to buy locally. The campaign will continue through the Christmas holiday season. The advantages, says a letter by Chamber President Jimmy Phillips to the County Commission, are:
-Increased consumer traffic in and around Gordon stores.
-Increased sales tax revenue generated by merchandise sells.
-Additional job opportunities.
The campaign likely will start in late June, probably at the chamber's monthly booster breakfast on June 26.
Retail Watch
Big and smaller retailers getting a fresh look:
-Bids are being sought for a "re-imaging" project at Sam's Club at 2550 Redmond Circle in Rome. Signage, exterior displays including shopping cart spots and other work are included. It is one of several touch-ups being done to Sam's stores in the state (and perhaps will quiet those rumors about the Wal-Mart/Sam's "jump" to Armuchee). The "refreshing" started in 2006, a Sam's Club spokeswoman says.
-Sign of the times: In East Rome, the K mart is not longer listed as "super" following the decision to sack grocery service and 80 jobs at the Rome store. The new Kmart sign has a temporary look to it.
-Look. Up in the sky...: Several storefronts along Broad Street are literally getting a new coat of paint, including Legends comic book store at 317 Broad.
