Cartersville Receives Nearly $200,000 for North Towne Housing Assistance

Media release: On Friday, August 26th, Gov. Nathan Deal announced more than $38.8 million in federal assistance from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development

was awarded to the state's Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program.  The State Community Development Block Grant program is a financial resource for Georgia's smaller and rural communities that strives to create jobs by supporting local projects.

The City of Cartersville will receive just shy of $200,000 which will be used for housing improvements, offering assistance for low- to moderate-income homeowners within a section of the North Towne neighborhood.  These housing upgrades will improve the health and safety of the homes while enhancing their street appeal.  Contingent upon individual project costs, the City hopes to rehabilitate seven homes.

"We are thrilled to have been awarded these funds," said Assistant to the City Manager Tom Quist.  "The funds will be used to further our goal of revitalizing the North Towne neighborhood.  This project is in line with the recommendations of the Urban Redevelopment Plan adopted by the Mayor and Council in 2010."

The project area, located within the North Towne Neighborhood, is represented by Council Member Kari Hodge, who worked actively with staff to design the project.

The CDBG program is administered by the Georgia Department of Community Affairs (DCA), which uses funds allocated through HUD to support local initiatives that focus on improving living conditions and economic opportunities.

"We are pleased that these funds will be combined with private investments and local funds to implement critical community and economic development projects. Each year, CDBG investments demonstrate how the state and local partners working together with the private sector can create a climate of success in local communities for families and businesses," said DCA Commissioner Mike Beatty.
