Cartersville Medical Center named to the Georgia Hospital Association's Partnership for Health and Accountability Core Measures Honor Roll.

Media release: Cartersville Medical Center in Cartersville has been named to the Georgia Hospital Association's (GHA) Partnership for Health and Accountability (PHA) Core Measures Honor Roll. Cartersville Medical Center is one of 15 hospitals in Georgia to be placed in the Chairman's category, the highest on the list. The honor roll is based on clinical data provided by the federal Centers for Medicaid & Medicare Services (CMS), which administers the nation's Medicare and Medicaid programs. The data was collected from July 2010 to June 2011.

"This is a great accomplishment for Cartersville Medical Center," said Joseph Parker, president of GHA. "This recognition further underscores the commitment of the Cartersville Medical Center staff to ensuring that every patient receives the best, most effective health care possible."

Hospitals are required to submit care data to CMS, which details how well a hospital's caregivers adhere to a list of Value-Based Purchasing (VBP) core measures. These measures are the clinical processes of care that are known to be the most effective methods of treatment for surgical patients and patients who have suffered heart attacks, pneumonia and heart failure.

For instance, a recommended treatment to help prevent a heart attack is to take aspirin either before or upon arrival at the hospital, as well as at discharge. A suggested treatment for pneumonia is to administer an antibiotic within four hours of a patient's arrival. It is recommended that surgery patients are given an antibiotic one hour prior to surgery to prevent infection. The VBP core measure is a composite measure that determines whether or not a patient received the right care at the right time. A hospital's adherence to these recommended clinical practices usually leads to better outcomes.

"It is our mission to ensure that each of our patients receives the right care at the right time and this recognition validates this," said Keith Sandlin, chief executive officer of Cartersville Medical Center. "This honor is a tribute to the hard work and dedication of our staff who are constantly working to make excellent care even better."

Dec. 30: The Singing Cookes & Caylor Family 12/30

Media release: It all started in 1962 when Hubert Cooke, a Virginia coal miner, left his job and started working for the Lord. Hubert combined his love of Bluegrass with his wife Jeanette's lifetime experience of playing guitar and singing in revivals to form The Cooke Duet. Through the year's they grew their own Gospel group, adding sons James on bass guitar and vocals, Ronny on keyboard, and Donny on drums to form The Singing Cookes. This dynamic and popular Gospel group will share 50 years of favorite hymns along with The Cooke Brothers and The Caylor Family on Friday, December 30, beginning at 7 p.m. at the Clarence Brown Conference Center in Cartersville.

The Cookes will be joined by longtime friends The Caylor Family from Mineral Bluff, Georgia.  Indeed, friendship is what put this concert together says organizer Keith Fountain.  He along with a group of friends have been following The Cooke Family for decades.  These friends pooled their resources to make this event happen in celebration of The Cookes 50th year in Gospel music.  Proceeds from ticket sales will benefit the singers' ministry.  Tickets are $10 per person CASH ONLY at the door; or charge by phone in advance by calling Keith Fountain at 706-252-1048.

The Clarence Brown Conference Center is located at 5450 GA Hwy 20 in Cartersville, Georgia.  Call the venue at 770-606-5763.  Directions: I-75 Exit 290, go west on GA 20 approximately 1.5 miles to Conference Center on left.

The three instructors were chosen from a larger group who were nominated for the honor by other faculty and staff members.

Among the finalists are Clint Cooper, Shannon Ferdarko and James Rutherfoord. Cooper, an air conditioning technology instructor, teaches students at the Canton Campus. Ferdarko, who is a practical nursing instructor, teaches at the North Metro Campus. Rutherfoord teaches math at the college's Appalachian Campus.

The three finalists will compete in another round of interviews Dec. 9 to determine the school winner, according to the coordinator of the competition, Mark Reddick. The winner will be announced Jan. 20 during a luncheon to honor both the outstanding instructor and outstanding student. Once selected, the winner will represent Chattahoochee Technical College at the next level of competition.

To become the state Rick Perkins Award winner, nominees go through three phases of selection: The college level, the regional level, and the state level. Each phase consists of a brief 5-7 minute introduction by the nominee to a panel of three judges followed by a 12-15 minute interview session. The state winner receives $1,000 and a crystal award.

The Rick Perkins Award for Excellence in Technical Instruction began in 1991 and is designed to recognize and honor technical college instructors who make significant contributions to technical education through innovation and leadership in their fields. Formerly known as the Commissioner's Award of Excellence, the Rick Perkins Award was renamed in memory and honor of Thomas "Rick" Perkins, an instructor at West Central Technical College, who received the Commissioner's Award immediately prior to his untimely death.
