Friday's updates

Big weekend ahead with locomotive festival, football, community events.

Restaurant updates

-Country Gentleman for sale: Rome's landmark restaurants for 30 years, The Country Gentleman, is on the market for $350,000. The business remains open. The real estate listing details two dining rooms, seating for 137 people, a modern kitchen--and the overall potential for Rome's emerging hotel highway bordered by U.S. 411 and Chateau Drive. It also hints of a "possible large shopping center in the near future," perhaps a nod to the stalled Seven Hills Town Center next to the East Rome Wal-Mart. The sale notice follows the closing of nearby Ramada (formerly Holiday Inn) Skytop several months ago> Listing-More restaurant news, inspection scores> Dining Guide

NAIA football championship

Another year here for NAIA championship game; will SPLOST decide rest?

There were two stories unfolding at Barron Stadium Thursday evening as the NAIA's Dennis Green confirmed reports that Shorter College and Rome/Floyd County would be home of the 2010 football championship in addition to this year's showdown and the 2008 game. Story one: the extension until 2010. Story two: A longer-term deal is possible if voters approved the all-or-nothing $42.9 million SPLOST package Nov. 3 that includes a $3.36 million upgrade to Barron Stadium.

Said Host Committee co-chair Bob Berry: By the NAIA's awarding Rome the 2010 event, the group "has given us a chance" and "has given us an opportunity" to secure an even longer commitment. But key to the deal will be artificial turf, something that became an issue after game-day washouts in both the old host, Savannah, Tenn., in 2007 and Rome last year. Shorter Athletics Director Bill Peterson says he's hopeful of "additional events" will be following the NAIA to Rome.
