Special report: Employment
4,300-plus jobs lost in major layoffs here since Jan. 2006
-Barely five months into the new year, Greater Rome is watching 650 jobs vanish and those are only the "direct" jobs. Yet to come will be the "second-tier" employers involving support businesses, suppliers, even restaurants and shops.
-And as grim as the running total between Jan. 1, 2006, and now looks--4,338 jobs together in Floyd, Bartow, Gordon and Polk counties--consider this: these mostly are employers required to inform the state Department of Labor and local governments of significant staff reductions.
-The four-county employment total for March 2010 was almost 124,000, down 4.5 percent or by 4,454 jobs, from 128,432 people employed in March 2009. That's more than 4,400 jobs in 12 months vs. 4,338 major layoffs over 4.5 years.
-Missing from the list that follows: the loss of three Goody's stores, Circuit City two Office Depots and others.

Another huge hit for West Rome as Pierre Foods to idle 350
-Just as the effects of CCH Small Firm Services move to Kennesaw start to be felt comes another blow to West Rome and the local economy.
-Pierre Foods, which in December 2006 paid $93 million for Rome's Zartic Inc., plans to cease production here by August, idling up to 350 employers.
-Some could be placed in other Pierre Foods' operations but none are local
-The hit comes as up to 380 CCH Small Firm Services employees start to transition to the new consolidated operation in Kennesaw. CCH's current offices are just off Redmond Circle, not far from the Pierre Foods campus.
-In March 2008, Pierre Foods closed its Cedartown plant; 153 people were laid off in the closing. The company is expanding in North Carolina. (Click)

Some positives out there as well:
-LG Hausys America broke ground last month on a new manufacturing facility near the Gordon-Bartow line valued at $50 million and bringing 80 new jobs. Hiring could start in the third quarter.
-The Calhoun Times reports Shaw will hire 200 workers in all for a refit plant in that community, aided by Georgia Northwestern Technical College training.
-A year ago, Bentley Dye held a job fair in Calhoun to fill 300 jobs; it received more than 2,000 applications. The company changed names and went on to hire additional workers for its new plant in Gordon County.
-Toyo Tire in White has continued to grow. Also, Pirelli, Marglen and other existing industries have announced expansions as well.
-Rome/Floyd development groups and the county commission meet today to discuss bonding and the industrial sites at Ga. 140 and Ga. 53. No new employer is expected to be identified at that time, however. But prospects are being courted.
-While new home construction has lagged, commercial and institutional building jobs have been plentiful. New residence halls were built at Berry College and now two major medical projects on either side of the Floyd Medical Center campus are under way.
-To date, we've seen little if any spinoff effect from the billion-dollar VW plant near Chattanooga. A suppliers park is accompanying that project.
-There are reports of 2,000 jobs associated with a massive indoor ski resort talked about near Red Top Mountain. Don't hold your breath on that one.
-Several hundred jobs are discussed as well by the committee pushing the Tennis Center of Georgia project that did not receive $7.5 million in key funding (bonds) from the state this legislative session. One caveat: Many of those potential jobs would go to enterprising Berry students.
Cartersville splits series with Eastside, losing opener by a 5-2 score and winning the night cap, 10-1. Deciding game three is at 5 p.m. Thursday. Hear it on WBHF 1450 AM and via Webcast here on Bartow Headlines
