>VW shifts to first gear in Chattanooga:

Perhaps missed in the Christmas scramble was this item: Volkswagen Group of America Inc. is beginning construction on a $30 million paint facility for the Chattanooga plant coming to Enterprise South Industrial Park (right). Walbridge has been selected as the general contractor. The plant is to be "weather-tight" by September. The announcement comes five months after VW announced it would invest $1 billion in Chattanooga for a new North American plant. State's jobless rate hits 7.5% in November; 25-year high

Local numbers due later this month: Georgia lost another 20,500 jobs between October and November, according to the state Department of Labor, which pushed the jobless rate to its highest level since July 1983. The jobless rate was up from 4.5 percent a year ago and up from 6.9 percent in October  "Job losses are accelerating throughout most of the state's economic sectors, with the exception of healthcare, education, and the federal government," State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond said. Over the last year, the number of payroll jobs decreased 94,400 or 2.3 percent. Manufacturing, construction and trade--along with administrative and support services, including temporary employment agencies-- were especially hard hit.
