Tellus exhibition dedicated to Hubert and Naomi Holland

Media release: Tellus Science Museum dedicated a major exhibition to Hubert and Naomi Holland on Saturday July 20, 2013 in honor of their years of support for the museum. The Naomi C. and Hubert G. Holland Restless Earth Exhibition, part of the Weinman Mineral Gallery, was named for the Holland's interest in geology and support for science education.

This exhibit includes displays on plate tectonics, earthquakes, volcanoes, and a cutaway of the Earth's interior. "Mr. and Mrs. Holland were always fascinated by plate tectonics and the formation of the Appalachian Mountains and its mineral resources," said Tellus executive director Jose Santamaria. "As a child, Hubert's father would take him gem and fossil collecting. This seemed to be a perfect fit."

Hubert Holland, a Marietta attorney who passed away in 2012, once said that "Naomi and I earned our way through college." After serving in Korea, Mr. Holland used the GI Bill to earn an undergraduate degree from the University of West Georgia and a law degree for the University of Georgia. He then practiced law full time and taught evening courses at what would become Kennesaw State University to help finance his wife's college expenses. Mrs. Holland graduated with a degree in Business Administration in Accounting from Georgia State University and became a tax accountant, ran an insurance agency, served as her husband's personal assistant and tax advisor at the law firm. Both worked out of the same office for over fifty years.

"The Hollands never forgot the value of education as a way to have a better economic future," said Tellus director of development Adam Wade. "They have supported Tellus because of their belief in the museum's educational programs. For many years, the Hollands have contributed to Tellus to support of our programs, campaigns, and endowment."

Agan's Bakery now offering Dippin' Dots at downtown Cartersville location

Media Release: In 1961, Agan's Bakery started up in downtown Cartersville, changing the way people looked at everything from decadent desserts to homemade rolls.   This business was started by Pledger Agan who based Agan's on quality products, customer service, and understanding and meeting customer demand.  The extraordinary flavors that escape from the Agan's kitchen is world famous - demonstrating how to achieve the ultimate in flavors and freshness. Expanding upon the principals in which they were founded upon, Abbey Agan Ross is pleased to announce that the Cartersville bakery will offer Dippin' Dots by the end of the month.

Many remember their first Dippin' Dots experience – the chill of the first bite and the explosion of flavor as the dots begin to melt in their mouth. It is no surprise that Dippin' Dots is the number one ice cream for fun and has been loved by kids of all ages for more than two decades. Most importantly, Dippin' Dots are made from fresh dairy ingredients flavored with a variety of fun, fruity, enticing and even exotic flavors. Those ingredients are frozen almost instantly in liquid nitrogen, a common element in the atmosphere used commercially for flash freezing. After production, Dippin' Dots are packaged and shipped worldwide.  You can find them at theme parks, festivals and places people gather to have fun – and now also in historic Downtown Cartersville.

Said Ross of the new offering, "We are so excited to have Dippin' Dots join the Agan's Bakery family. We will have 3 oz. and 5 oz. cups, as well as eight flavors to choose from.  We surveyed a number of our customers via social media to get their feedback on their favorite varieties, and are going to have a great selection for customers."

In 1988, Dippin' Dots Founder Curt Jones changed the way the world enjoys ice cream.  Jones, a microbiologist, pioneered the process of cryogenic encapsulation...a scientific way of saying he used super-cold freezing methods to make little beads of ice cream. Not only were the ice cream beads delicious and fun to eat, Jones knew that flash-freezing the ice cream ingredients would lock in flavor and freshness.

"Dippin' Dots is a unique product, and one that is enjoyed by people of all ages," said Cartersville Downtown Development Authority Manager Tara Currier. "I don't know much else that goes as well together as ice cream and cookies; take specialty cookies and other delicious baked goodies and combine that with a very different twist on your traditional ice cream, and you have quite the product offering! I am so happy for Agan's Bakery, and know that this will be another great reason for people to stop in and shop at one of downtown's oldest businesses."

Dippin' Dots will be available at Agan's by the end of July, and to celebrate, will remain open until 8 PM during the next "First Friday," coming up on August 2. Held the first Friday of each month in downtown Cartersville, "First Friday" events allow for extended hours to enjoy downtown as a number of retail merchants stay open until 8:00 pm to allow customers to experience all that downtown Cartersville has to offer, and also enjoy bluegrass music which is scattered throughout the downtown district.

Agan's Bakery is open Tuesday – Saturday, from 6 am – 6 pm, in historic downtown Cartersville at 141 West Main Street.  For more information on Agan's Bakery, call 770.382.8882.

July 31 is the new deadline for Chattahoochee Tech students

Media release: Chattahoochee Technical College announced today that it is extending the deadline for prospective students.

The new document deadline has been extended to July 31, at 6 p.m. for new and transferring students to have documents submitted for admission for Fall Semester.

"The extension gives everyone approximately eight extra business days to get their applications, test scores, transcripts and other items in our hands," explained Executive Director

More than 1,200 new students have already registered for classes, which are scheduled to begin August 19. Chattahoochee Technical College offers more than 45 programs of study (or majors). "With a growing list of articulation agreements with other colleges and universities, prospective students are able to continue their education," said Cusack. "Students are finding Chattahoochee Technical College an affordable and accessible way to start their college careers with more than 40 classes in general education and other areas that transfer seamlessly to local colleges and universities."

Financial Aid is available to qualified students to help them meet the costs of attending college. Many CTC students qualify for some type of financial aid. Students apply for HOPE Grant or Scholarship, Pell Grant and other federal and state aid via the FAFSA at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov.
