Chattahoochee Tech Wins Bid To Host 2013 NJCAA Half-Marathon Championships

(Media Release) The NJCAA announced this week at its annual legislative meetings in Colorado Springs, Col., that Chattahoochee Tech will host the 2013 NJCAA Half-Marathon National Championship race at the Silver Comet Trail. CTC hosted the event for the first time last November at a stretch of the Silver Comet near the college's Paulding County campus, and welcomed over 200 runners from around the country. The event was CTC's first hosted NJCAA national championship.

Chatt Tech earned high marks on its hosting bid last November 19, as attendees praised the stretch of course located in Dallas, Ga. The Silver Comet Trail, which spans over 61 miles from Smyrna in Cobb County westward to the Georgia-Alabama line, is a local favorite of hikers, runners and cyclists and is one of the better-known trails in the Southeast region.

"Winning the 2013 half-marathon bid sends the message that Chattahoochee Tech is doing something right," said CTC athletic director David Archer. "Everyone that came to the event this past November was pleased to point that the NJCAA membership approved us again, and I think that's a great sign. All the attending teams really liked the course.

"Being so close to our Paulding County campus, it creates a natural tie-in. It's good that it's so close to buildings with our name on them."

The half-marathon national championship race is unique in that it is the only such competition during the NJCAA athletic season. Taking place a week after the cross country championships, the half-marathon attracts many advanced long-distance runners from across the junior college landscape.

At last year's half-marathon, Iowa Central won the men's team championship and shared the women's title with South Plains (Levelland, Tex.), which will host the 2012 edition of the event. A number of CTC's men's and women's cross country team members also competed in the event.

Chattahoochee Tech has competed in NJCAA cross country since 2004 and track and field since 2006, all under current head coach Steve Prettyman.

CTC ATHLETICS: AD David Archer Named Men's Region Director of GCAA

(Media Release) The Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association and commissioner David Elder announced this week that Chattahoochee Tech athletic director David Archer was unanimously voted in as the men's region director for the 2012-13 athletics year. Archer, who also coaches the men's basketball team at Chatt Tech, currently is in his first season as assistant men's region director of the GCAA.

"It's going to carry more responsibility with the GCAA and its member teams," said Archer of his new position. "I also welcome the challenge of working more closely with the NJCAA."

The previous men's region director, Charles Mullis of Middle Georgia College, will be vacating his position on July 1 as MGC begins its merger with Macon State College and exits the GCAA. Moving up to assistant men's region director will be Georgia Perimeter AD and men's basketball coach Alfred Barney.

Wakeboard Park at LakePoint Sporting Community to be named Terminus

(Media Release Wake Park Atlanta, LLC announces the winning name from its "Name the Park Contest" launched in late 2011. The new wake park, which will be located at LakePoint Sporting Community & Town Center, is to be named Terminus Wake Park.

"The contest responses we received were from people all over the world through our web campaign and partnership with Alliance Wake. More than a thousand names were submitted," said Austin Singleton, principal of Wake Park Atlanta, LLC.

The Grand Prize winner is Chase Andrews, from Buford, GA, who won a complete wakeboard package and lifetime annual pass. Two runner-up winners, Justin Fletcher and Antoine Allaux won an annual pass to the park.

The new Terminus Wake Park will encompass more than 17 acres, and have two full cable lakes with a full six-station Sesitec Cable System and one smaller straight-line lake.

"The closer and closer we get to construction, the more excited we get about bringing this fun and exciting sport to the Greater Atlanta area," said Singleton.  "The contest was just another indicator of how excited people are to have a world-class facility that will accommodate every skill level of wake boarders from all over the Southeast."

The park's signature will be an elaborate series of rails and obstacles. Many of the obstacles at the park will not be available anywhere else in the United States and the custom obstacles will be the first of their kind in the world.

"As one of the most ambitious projects in the country, LakePoint is truly going to be a sports mecca," said LakePoint Developer partner Judy Sparks. "We are excited to offer not only team sports, but water sports for every skill level."

Chattahoochee Tech places 5th in nation at 2012 PLANET Student Career Days

More than 20 Chattahoochee Technical College horticulture students, instructors and staff members celebrated Sunday in Manhattan, Kan. as it was announced that the team had placed fifth in the annual competition portion of PLANET Student Career Days behind first place finishers Brigham Young University - Idaho. Chattahoochee Technical College was the only Georgia college or university to crack the top ten this year and the highest finishing two year college of the event.

This marked the 20th year that the college's team has finished in the top ten in the nation, including a first place finish overall in 2008 and 2010. Led by horticulture instructors John Hatfield and Bejie Herrin and Horticulture Technician Jessica Watters, the team competed against students from about 60 two-year and four-year colleges and universities. As many as 100 students competed in many of the competition's 28 events.

Chattahoochee Technical College's team scored a combined 4,141.2 points, almost 100 points ahead of sixth place finishers, Colorado State University. Along with the school's fifth place award, the team had 23 students finish in the top ten, including nine top three finishers in individual and group events. The team also won for best college cheer, receiving a check for $1,000 from John Deere.

Chattahoochee Technical College student and Canton resident Keith Loggins was also announced as the top student at the event. Loggins beat out the other approximately 900 competitors to finish first in the competitive events. Scoring 448.1 points in the five events he competed in Saturday, Loggins was more than 10 points ahead of the second place finisher.

Student Career Days, is in its 36th year and is organized by the nation's lawn and landscape association, the Professional Landcare Network, also known as PLANET. It is an annual three-day event designed to jumpstart horticultural careers for college students. Students from approximately 60 universities and colleges competed in events directly related to the skills necessary for a career in the Green Industry, including tree climbing, hardscape installation, wood construction, sales presentation, skid steer operation, and plant identification. They also participated in a career fair and networking events.

For a more comprehensive list of the college's results at the 2012 PLANET Student Career Days, visit www.studentcareerdays.org/pdfs/2012/12ctc.pdf.

CMC observes National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month

Media release: March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness month, and Cartersville Medical Center  joins efforts to educate Northwest Georgia communities about the importance of prevention and screening.  The American Cancer Society indicates that colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosed in both men and women in the United States.

"Colorectal cancer often starts as a polyp, long before symptoms appear," said Yaman Tayara, MD, gastroenterologist on staff at Cartersville Medical Center.   "Age is the single most important risk factor for the disease.  The key is taking healthy steps to prevent colorectal cancer, as well as scheduling a regular screening (colonoscopy) to potentially catch the disease in the earliest stages when it is most treatable."

Early diagnosis, education and understanding the risks can help prevent colorectal cancer.   According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the risk of developing colorectal cancer increases with age.  More than 90 percent of colorectal cancer diagnoses occur in people aged 50 years or older.

Cartersville Medical Center offers these tips to help Georgians lower their risk of developing colorectal cancer:

·        Get screened—Begin regular colorectal cancer screenings by scheduling a colonoscopy at age 50.  If you have a personal or family history of colorectal cancer, talk to your physician about earlier or more frequent screenings.

·        Eat healthy—Enjoy a low-fat diet with plenty of vegetables rich in fiber and fish high in omega-3 fatty acids

·        Exercise—Get moving and exercise for at least 30 minutes at least 5 days per week.

·        Kick the habit—If you use tobacco, quit.  Avoid tobacco products if you haven't already started.

·        Avoid alcohol—If you drink alcohol, do so in moderation.
