Fuddruckers getting company at Guyton Park: Speculation that the
Cartersville franchise of Fuddruckers on Tennessee Street is closing is in error, says owner Charles J. Curlee. Comments appearing on the Bartow Life Web forum conclude a closing is planned with a Japanese steak house filling the spot. Ronn Goss Jr. confirms a steak house is coming but not in the Fuddruckers' slot at Guyton Park Village Center. Look for the new restaurant to open in the former Coffee Depot location around Feb. 1, Goss says. The owner just opened Blue Fin in Rome and is out of the country at this time; he owns several restaurants so the exact format of the Cartersville store isn't known. Curlee also owns the successful Rome Fuddruckers' franchise across from State Mutual Stadium.

Cartersville's Lori Royal wins Labor Department's Beck award

Lori Royal, a Georgia Department of Labor services specialist in the department's Cartersville Career Center, has been named recipient of the Larry D. Beck Spirit Award. The 
Larry D. Beck Spirit Award was developed by Commissioner Michael Thurmond to be presented at the Georgia Employer Committee State Conference. Royal began her career with the labor department in January 2006 in the Cartersville Career Center. She has worked in the Employment Services Unit and has assisted jobseekers with their job search. One satisfied jobseeker said of Royal: "I was looking for some hope for another job and I got that from Lori; she provides great customer service." With an influx of laid-off workers in the area, Royal is now working in the Unemployment Services Unit, processing unemployment insurance claims.
The award is given in memory of the late Larry Beck of Cartersville, who served the Georgia Department of Labor for 34 years, including stints as manager of the Cartersville Career Center and assistant commissioner of the department's rehabilitation services division. Beck, a quadriplegic because of a diving accident when he was 18, died in July 2007 at the age of 60.
"Larry Beck was truly an inspiration for all who knew him," Thurmond said, "and this award symbolizes his eternal spirit. Lori Royal exemplifies all the wonderful qualities that Larry inspired in us. She and her husband, Andre, have fostered 25 children in their home over the past nine years. And, Lori understands what wonderful gifts foster parents can be for children, because she, too, was raised in a foster home."
