Big weekend in Bartow begins with trip to Oz. Police updates. Weather: Not as hot; more rain due

 

What's ahead in Bartow County:

-Aug. 20: First Friday Family Fun Night; reset from Aug. 6: 7:30 p.m. "The Wizard of Oz" is the featured presentation.

-Aug. 21: Tellus Mineral Symposium on Gold from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Enjoy four in-depth lectures by local and national gold experts at this one-of-a-kind symposium. Tickets to the event include refreshments, lectures on the mineralogy and history of gold, a live auction to benefit Tellus Collections, and a weekend museum pass to Tellus. -Aug. 21: The Bartow County Friends of the Library is sponsoring the 2nd Annual Book'in It for the Friends of the Library 5K race and 1mile Fun Run. The fun run is at 7:30 a.m.. and the 5K is at 8 a.m.. This is an off-road race held at the Woodland High School Cross Country course in Cartersville, Georgia. The course is both scenic and challenging as it covers an open field, shaded trails and one hill. Please visit www.bartowlibraryonline.org for registration info.  Current race registration is $15 and increases to $20 on race day. All proceeds will benefit the Bartow County Library System.

The Bartow County Sheriff's Office has arrested an Acworth man in connection with the a late night fight involving gunfire (Media Release) Investigators have charged Charles Everett Jenkins, 44, of Middle Court, Acworth, with Convicted Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Terroristic Threats, and Reckless Conduct. According to Sheriff Clark Millsap, Jenkins was in a heated argument with residents at 5107 Waterfront Drive just after midnight on August 18, 2010. Witnesses reported that Jenkins left the location and came back then fired two shots from a pistol while in his truck in front of 5107 Waterfront Drive. Bartow County Sheriff's Office Investigators arrested Jenkins and later recovered a firearm at his residence. Jenkins remains in custody at the Bartow County Jail awaiting bond hearing.

Closer look at latest local restaurant inspection scores:

-Each week, we look at the high and low restaurant inspection scores as determined by the public health departments in Floyd, Bartow, Gordon, Polk and Chattooga counties. Below are those scoring 95 or better, or below 70:
-Bartow County: The Booth Western Art Museum came in with a perfect 100- followed by a 99 for Louie's Cafe; 98 for CiCi's Pizza; 96 for Honeybaked Ham; and 95 each for Meg Pie Too and Best Western hotel's breakfast.
-Floyd County: Las Palmas at RiverWalk scored a 95.
-Gordon County: 100 each for The Chuckwagon and for Willy's at the Elks Club. Calhoun Health Care scored a 97; a 96 for El Pollo Allegre No. 2.
-Chattooga County: Two Summerville restaurants had scores below 70: Hong Kong had a 68 while Pizza Hut had a 52.
