Laredo's coming to Cartersville? Honors for fire chief. Latest Bartow updates

 

The return of Laredo's? Look for news of a Laredo's Mexican Bar and Grille coming to Cartersville. Bids on the project are due on Monday. Laredo's, part of a regional chain, had a brief life at RiverWalk before giving way to Las Palmas.

Cartersville Fire Chief Scott Carter has been elected as President of the Georgia State Firefighters Association. The association is the largest and oldest Fire Service Organization in Georgia with over five-thousand members. The membership is comprised of all ranks from firefighters to Chief Officers; career and volunteer, with an emphasis placed on improving and promoting the fire service profession here in Georgia. -Aug. 19: Cartersville City Council, 7 p.m. Hear it live on WBHF 1450 AM or Web cast here on Bartow Headlines. Work session begins at 6 p.m.

-Aug. 20: First Friday Family Fun Night; reset from Aug. 6: 7:30 p.m. "The Wizard of Oz" is the featured presentation.

-Aug. 21: Tellus Mineral Symposium on Gold from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Enjoy four in-depth lectures by local and national gold experts at this one-of-a-kind symposium. Tickets to the event include refreshments, lectures on the mineralogy and history of gold, a live auction to benefit Tellus Collections, and a weekend museum pass to Tellus. -Aug. 21: The Bartow County Friends of the Library is sponsoring the 2nd Annual Book'in It for the Friends of the Library 5K race and 1mile Fun Run. The fun run is at 7:30 a.m.. and the 5K is at 8 a.m.. This is an off-road race held at the Woodland High School Cross Country course in Cartersville, Georgia. The course is both scenic and challenging as it covers an open field, shaded trails and one hill. Please visit www.bartowlibraryonline.org for registration info.  Current race registration is $15 and increases to $20 on race day. All proceeds will benefit the Bartow County Library System.

Nearly 3,000 Berry, Shorter students return to class starting Monday:

-Notice any increase in traffic? Larger crowds at some of the more popular haunts? The 2010-11 academic year begins Monday for students at Shorter and Berry

-Freshmen arrived Saturday at Shorter with Camp Hawk held this week; residence halls open this Saturday for returning students.

-Shorter students will get used to a new name--university, not college--and perhaps a new president. Harold Newman has announced his retirement.

-At Berry, Viking Venture, ice cream socials and other events are welcoming students. Some major campus construction projects have been finished since spring, including Kilpatrick Commons (right).
