Media Release- Chief Thomas N. Culpepper has advised that in conjunction with the Drug Enforcement Administration of the U.S. Department of Justice, the Cartersville Police Department is hosting another "Pill Drop" event on Saturday, April 27, 2013. The Cartersville Police Department will be participating locally by providing a booth for citizens to drop off unused, old, or unwanted medications for proper disposal.
The booth will be located in the parking lot turn-around of the new Police and Fire Headquarters located at 195 Cassville Road on Saturday, April 27th from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Items that are labeled as "Bio-Hazard" and items such as needles and syringes will not be accepted.
According to Chief Culpepper, "This event has been very successful in the past. Last year, approximately 58 pounds of medications were dropped off." After the take-back event is over, Chief Culpepper stated that the medications which are received during the event are disposed of in a controlled burn environment.
Chief Culpepper stated that the Department is also able to take in unwanted medications throughout the year and is in the process of installing a receptacle by the window in the lobby of the Police Department's Customer Service area.
Most drugs can cause serious illness or even be fatal if used improperly. Medications thrown away in the garbage pose the risk of someone obtaining them to use or sell. Many flush medications down the toilet which could contaminate our water supply.
