Wednesday's updates

More local layoffs on the way? Several dozen jobs at the AEP plastics plant in Cartersville appear to be in jeopardy. In an announcement made Tuesday, the company reported that "To date we have shut down our plant in Fontana, Calif., notified employees of a shut down of our plant in Cartersville, Ga., and reduced head count."  Around 30 people work for AEP in Cartersville.  AEP reported earnings of $11.6 million in the second quarter, more than doubling the $5.5 million in income for the same period in 2008. click AEP

What's next for Berry Crossing?

The photos above and below show the ready-to-grow building sites for restaurants and shops at Berry Crossing, home of the recently opened CVS store at Martha Berry and the Bypass. The drug store quickly rose on the corner, opening in March.

Look closely and you can see the foundations of the strip center's future occupants. >But the only thing new on the remaining site has been a Board of Adjustments notice about changes being sought on setback standards which would allow the project to be subdivided (June 16, 2 p.m., click meeting agenda). We have another round of calls into Metro Group Development, which announced plans for Berry Crossing last fall, and Ables Realty. One reason to subdivide: A potential tenant could be seeking land ownership with an option to design it's own building.

>As designed, Berry Crossing is to feature a 37,000-square-foot campus including CVS, the Wachovia branch already on site (due for renovation) and 19,500 square feet of retail space. (click).
