Election day, Aug. 10: Precincts open 7 a.m. until 7 p.m.

-On the ballot: There are statewide races for both Democrats and Republicans, including the GOP House 14 runoff (Christian Coomer vs. Shep Helton). Click

-Turnout is forecast to be light, perhaps 10 percent tops, in local counties.

-Republican voters face a surprisingly large ballot; just one race for Democrats.

-Gordon County residents have a school board and county commission race to decide; some also will vote in the Ninth Congressional District race.

-In Polk County, two Democratic candidates for County Commission.

-Perhaps the race with the most local interest: Preston Smith vs. Sam Olens for the Republican attorney general nomination.

Big month for sports legends in Northwest Georgia:

-Former University of Georgia football coach and athletics director Vince Dooley will sign "Vince's Garden: The Horticultural Journey of a Football Coach" on Friday at The Calhoun Depot beginning at 1:30 p.m. It is open to all. The event is hosted by The Calhoun-Gordon Council for a Literate Community.

-'A player to be named later.' Also this weekend, although the times are fluid, another sports headliner is scheduled to be in the region. We're working to confirm the visit.
