Bartow's headlines: 49% of county returns Census forms so far; latest special election updates; sunny, high of 79.

Polk first, Chattooga last in Census forms by Thursday's deadline

Thursday's the deadline for returning the Census questionnaires mailed to local households in recent weeks.

-As of Tuesday, an estimate from the U.S. Census office showed 51 percent of Polk's questionnaires had been returned, followed by 50 percent each in Floyd and Gordon; 49 percent in Bartow and 48 percent in Chattooga. The state: 45 percent. Track your town here

-In the 2000 Census: Floyd was tops with 72 percent followed by Gordon County. Chattooga had 58 percent participation a decade ago.

Qualifying  ends today at noon for House District 12 seat:  As of Tuesday night, Rick Jasperse of Jasper and Truett Moss II of Calhoun, both Republicans, had qualified with the secretary of state's office to seek the post vacated by Tom Graves. What's ahead in Bartow County:

-March 31: Cartersville Medical Center will host a blood drive with Blood Assurance on Wednesday from noon to 5 p.m. Volunteer blood donations, not paid blood collections, are the only source of blood products used for patient transfusion. Blood Assurance is the only provider of blood products for Cartersville Medical Center. All donors must be at least 17 years old (16 years old with parental consent), weigh at least 110 pounds and be in good health. Visitors at any blood drive during the month of March can register for an earth-friendly gift basket containing household items. All donors will receive a complimentary snack and t-shirt. Blood Assurance also has a new location across from Cartersville Medical Center in the Collins Pointe Plaza. April 14/'Local Goverment Expo' highlights 'energy to transform: A free lunch and giveaways are part of the program set for 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. by the fountain and in Friendship Plaza.
