Latest legislative updates from state Rep. Barry LoudermilkClick

-From the current newsletter: "I am introducing legislation that will name intersections in honor of these true American heroes that laid down their lives for our  freedom. In honor of Sgt. Jeffrey Jordan of Cave Spring, we will be naming the intersection of U.S. 27 and Hwy 140 in Floyd County in his honor. We will dedicate the intersection of U.S. 41 and Hwy 140 in Adairsville in honor of U.S. Marine Corps Lance Corp. Seth Sharp. And we will dedicate the intersection of U.S. 41 and Hwy 53 in Calhoun in honor of First Sgt. John Blair."

Sudden surge in Armuchee dining spots:

-The recessionary economy isn't holding back 'entree enterpreneurs' when it comes to opening restaurants in the Armuchee area. Consider:

-Heavenly BBQ Buffet  made a name for itself in Cedartown among barbecue zealots. Now Heavenly is coming to the spot at Armuchee Village that was home to Backyard Barbecue. States the Web teaser: "Tommy Pope brings Cedartown's and NWGA's favorite barbecue to us in March 2010."  This is an all-you-can eat buffet. (right)

-We've already discussed another new venture in a familiar spot: Downtown  Rome's Old Tymer Barbecue is now open in the one-time home of Owen's Barbecue right before the turn into Richard B. Russell Airport/Towers Field.
-Just below Old Tymer is Boondocks, offering lunch four days a week and dinner three nights per week (right).
-The one-time home of Los Portales on Martha Berry is now home to La Conquista. Look for a Wednesday opening at 3989 Martha Berry Highway.

State of the News Media 2010 takes hard look at 'what now?'

The annual report by the Pew Project for Excellence in Journalism has just been released and it is an eye-opener. Among the conclusions:

-Newspapers, including online, saw ad revenue fall 26 percent in 2009 and 43 percent over the past three years.

-Local TV ads fell 22 percent as did radio.

-Online ad revenue fell by 5 percent ; "revenue to news sites most likely also fared much worse."

-The most stunning finding: "Veronis Suhler Stevenson projects that by 2013, after the economic recovery, three elements of old media — newspapers, radio and magazines — will take in 41 percent less in ad revenues than they did in 2006."

-And the trend to watch? "In 2009 Twitter and other social media emerged as powerful tools for disseminating information and mobilizing citizens... The majority of Internet users (59 percent) now use some kind of social media, including Twitter, blogging and networking sites."
