It's another see-saw jobless report from the Georgia Department of Labor. The early August numbers show:

-Rome/Floyd gains 900 jobs year-over-year: The labor force was 39,600 last month compared to 38,700 in August 2009, That's a 2.3 percent gain while the state's overall tally was down 0.7 percent in the same period. Apparently the Pierre Foods' layoffs (up to 350) have not "hit" as yet. Also, the CCH move to Kennesaw was last month, taking more than 350 jobs out of the market. So why a 900-job surge?

-The number of first-time jobless claims in Floyd jumped 22.7 percent year over year, from 1,046 in August 2009 to 1,283 last month. Plus, Floyd had 24 more claims in August vs. July 2010. Maybe Pierre reports are in. Bartow, Gordon and Polk all reported decreases in both month-to-month and year-over-year claims. Chattooga saw a drop between July and August but a 12.1 percent increase.

-Statewide, the jobless rate rose to 10 percent in August, the same as a year earlier. The county-by-county totals are due in two weeks.

The Farm. formerly Zion Farms, opens to public

By Natalie Simms

-The property once known as Zion Farms is now open to the public as "The Farm" under new owners Lee and Dixie Bagley. The Bagleys boughtthe property more than a year, and have been working on cleaning up the land and repairing the barn and facilities. "The barn needed a lot of improvements and repairs," says Dixie Bagley. "We've been . . . regrading the land and pastures, and clearing the trails on our 350 acres of land." The Farm is ready to board horses, for long-term and temporary needs, as well as provide full equine care and services. Also, The Farm is open for weddings, parties and outdoor adventures including trail-riding, hiking, camping and fishing. "We're a place for everyone to come and enjoy the outdoors," she says. Bagley has a Facebook page for more updates. The Farm is at 2979 Big Texas Valley Road and is open on weekends by appointment. 706-252-0497 or dixiebagley@gmail.com.

Calhoun Center Logo No word on proposed Holly Springs Prime Outlets:

-With the Calhoun Premium Outlets (we had the new name wrong at first) renamed and part of Simon, we checked Wednesday to see what was up with another Prime Outlets mall planned for our area--this one in Holly Springs near Canton (background). A Simon representative said she had no details on the site as it wasn't part of the purchase agreement. The Simon/Prime deal included all outlets except one near Saint Augustine, Fla., and two others under development in California and Texas.

It is no wonder BBC has grown from 166 local riders in 2001 to over 1,400 from across the country. The ride begins and ends at the Anheuser-Busch Brewery in Cartersville and participants can choose to ride 14, 31, 48, 66 or 100 miles on quiet roads through Bartow and Gordon counties. Most important, BBC is the largest fundraiser for Hickory Log Vocational School, a non-profit organization in White, which provides a caring, loving home for mentally challenged men and creates a family for its residents. The ride also benefits a variety of other local charities. Registration is $40. For more: visit www.bikebbc.com or (706) 296-7103.
